Challenge

There is a ton of stigma surrounding opioid use disorder (OUD) and healthcare physicians respond in a variety of ways.

Our client, a previous patient of OUD, had experienced firsthand the quality of care surrounding this topic, and started SocialTheory, the social enterprise that combines innovative technology and human-centered narratives to create impactful public health solutions to complex issues like opioid use disorder.

Project Overview

We built an immersive web experience to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge to respond effectively. By combining visual storytelling with evidence-based education, our platform offers a human-centered approach to foster understanding, discussion, and support across medical and community networks.

Intended users for this product include medical professionals, hospital and healthcare networks, emergency medical services, and more.

User and Industry Research

To begin, we Interviewed healthcare professionals from a wide range of healthcare professionals to learn more about how learning modules fit into their roles. This led us to a need statement:

Healthcare professionals need an interactive yet succinct online learning module that allows them to effectively learn about harm and stigma reduction surrounding opioid use disorders.

In our industry research, the team explored various types of platforms, from online CME courses to interactive narrative platforms to explore ways that information can be presented in a human-centered format. We looked at sources like online textbooks as well as interactive Netflix shows like Black Mirror.

Sketches and grayscales

The partner provided us with the artwork material, which was created by an external illustrator. We have 36 frames in total that make up the ~3 min video, with most frames having a clickable , interactive element that displays more text/graphics.

Design Goals for Survival Story

  1. How can we infuse interactive elements seamlessly into a video module to allow for engagement while learning?

  2. How can we ensure the content and display is as accessible and easy-to-navigate as possible?

  3. How can we clearly communicate learning objectives and outcomes?

  4. How can we properly design for audio/visual content while allowing space for pauses?

  5. How can we establish trust with the users once they start to engage with the platform?

Hi-Fi's

Our app interface worked primarily alongside the brand kit / style guide that the lab provided. We iterated many times on the main colorways of the app, and conducted various design feedback sessions with peer designers. Throughout this process, we aimed to stay user-friendly and ensure that our app retained its ease of use.

Upon completion of the design, we took our prototype back out to the field to conduct user tests. With any feedback that we received, we implemented necessary improvements. Our developers worked alongside our process to create the app, and we launched it into beta testing by the end of the ten week period.

Current Status

While Survival Story has yet to launch in market, our partner and his company, SocialTheory, have amassed many followers and supporters, as well as investors and grants from a variety of organizations. I was lucky enough to get to witness and interact with some interested clientele at the 2024 Northern New England MedTech Conference, where I participated in the student innovator showcase and presented our project to attendees.
